Comparison of the Best Shopify Email Marketing Apps [2022]

A good email marketing strategy is a must-have for every Shopify store.

Being able to send emails to your customers that reach them directly in their inbox with personalized content is something that few other marketing channels can compete with.

It’s not surprising then that every $1 spent on email generates an average of $36 in sales

Combine this with how little relative effort email marketing requires thanks to its potential for automation and you’ve got yourself a powerful way to make more sales.

That’s if you are utilizing an email app that integrates with your Shopify store.

Thankfully there are plenty of options to choose from on the Shopify app store.

So many options in fact, that it can be hard to know which one is the best fit for your store and needs.

That’s why we’ve put together this list and guide to help you choose the best email marketing app for your Shopify store.

What to look for in a Shopify email app

Before we dive into the list below and start comparing what we consider to be the best Shopify email marketing apps in 2022, let’s first take a step back and consider what you should be looking for.

In general, you’ll want an email app that can achieve the following:

Is able to integrate with your Shopify store

This means being able to communicate with your Shopify store’s backend.

Having an email app that does this is absolutely essential as it allows you to set up best practice automation workflows like your welcome series, abandoned cart emails, customer review requests, and so on.

Basically, by being able to access your Shopify data, you’ll be able to set up workflows such as “if a customer purchases this product, send them this email” or “if a customer abandons their cart, send them a reminder email with a coupon code.”

Another major benefit of having a properly integrated email app is that you can better track the impact of the emails you send.

For example, you’ll be able to see how many sales the newsletter you sent last week generated and which automations are your most profitable.

Most email apps that integrate with your Shopify store will also let you insert products into your newsletters and email campaigns in just a few clicks.

This saves you from having to manually copy and paste images, product descriptions, prices, and links to the products on your online store.

A visual drag and drop editor

The days of clunky email editors are thankfully behind us.

Most email apps now offer a visual drag and drop builder that lets you see what your email will look like while you’re creating it.

This will save you much frustration and time by not having to go back and forth between saving your progress and previewing your email campaign.

It also means you can create emails without having to know HTML or CSS.

The ability to integrate with other marketing channels

This isn’t a necessity when choosing an email app for your Shopify store, but the ability to sync your email marketing with other channels can be very useful.

This includes the ability to sync particular email lists or segments with social media such as custom audiences on Facebook to improve the effectiveness of your social media marketing.

Or a more recent trend is also being able to send SMS marketing through the same app that you send emails with.

By being able to properly integrate your marketing channels, you’ll improve the effectiveness of all of them.

Even if you’re not currently utilizing other channels such as social media or SMS, this is still something you may want to consider to future-proof your choice.

The best email marketing apps for Shopify

Now that you have an idea of what makes an email app a potentially good fit for your Shopify store, let’s take a look at our picks for the best Shopify email apps.

In this list, we’ll provide a brief overview of the app, its features, and what makes it unique or noteworthy in the Shopify app store. We’ll then look at its reviews and pricing.

All of the apps listed below are available on the Shopify app store and integrate with your store’s backend. They all also feature visual drag and drop editors.

Klaviyo

When it comes to email marketing for ecommerce businesses, the top name in town would probably have to be Klaviyo.

It’s achieved this by focusing exclusively on serving the email marketing needs of merchants and providing them with the ability to set up advanced automation workflows and unlocking the potential of your store’s data.

After Shopify’s own email marketing service, Klaviyo is listed as the most installed email app among Shopify stores.

If you’re looking for the complete solution and one that will still serve the needs of your store for years to come, then Klaviyo is worth checking out.

Klaviyo also comes with SMS capability and plenty of ready-to-use email templates so you can send stunning-looking emails quickly and easily.

While there’s a free plan for up to 250 contacts, the leading email marketing platform for online stores does come at an increasingly large price for larger lists.

All of Klaviyo’s capabilities and features can also be a lot to take in if you’re new to email marketing and not sure where to start.

In terms of reviews, it’s a mixed bag as well. At the time of writing, Klaviyo has an average rating of 4.1/5 on the Shopify app store which is fairly low compared with other apps on this list.

  • Free plan for up to 250 contacts
  • Paid email plans start at $20/month
  • Average 4.1/5 review

Shopify Email

No list of Shopify email apps would be complete without Shopify’s email marketing service.

Shopify Email exists at the other end of the spectrum to Klaviyo: it’s a lot more basic and bare bones with little of the advanced features that Klaviyo has.

While this means it’s unlikely to meet the ends of larger, more established stores, if you’re running a small business and are new to email marketing, it might just be the perfect fit for your store.

One of the great things about Shopify Email is just how seamless it is with the Shopify backend. You don’t have to get used to a new interface, instead you can set up and launch email campaigns from right within your Shopify admin.

There are plenty of email templates to choose from and you can also send emails from your own domain if you purchased your domain through Shopify.

The main downside is the lack of advanced and even intermediate email marketing features such as setting up custom automation workflows and design flexibility.

This is reflected in the much more affordable pricing.

You can send up to 10,000 emails per month absolutely free. If you’ve used up your 10,000 free email sends, you’re then charged $1 for each additional 1,000 emails you send.

The average review comes out just ahead of Klaviyo at 4.2 out of 5.

  • Free plan for up to 10,000 email sends per month
  • $1 per additional 1,000 email sends
  • Average 4.2/5 review

Mailchimp

If there’s one email marketing app people are going to know, it’s Mailchimp.

Mailchimp is an incredibly popular email marketing service for small businesses and non-for-profits across many different industries, not just online retailers.

Being an industry leader, Mailchimp ticks most boxes when it comes to what you’d want from a Shopify email app.

There are plenty of templates (though not available in the free plan), integrations with Facebook and Instagram ads, ability to create landing pages, and plenty more. You can even send your customers postcards (again, only available if you’re willing to pay for it).

While it might sound that Mailchimp is a logical choice for Shopify merchants, their relationship with Shopify and commitment to the Shopify platform and its merchants has not been without controversy.

Mailchimp publicly ‘broke up’ with Shopify back in 2019. A situation that left users unsure of what would happen with their email marketing.

They have since reappeared on the Shopify app store but have the lowest average rating of any app on this list: just 3.4/5.

There is a free plan though that lets you have up to 2,000 contacts after which paid plans start at $11 a month which increases to $299 a month for 10,000 contacts.

  • Free plan for up to 2,000 contacts
  • Paid plan starts at $11 a month
  • Average 3.4/5 review

Omnisend

Omnisend is a solid choice for Shopify merchants at any stage of their journey.

The app features advanced automation workflows, the ability to integrate email and SMS marketing, AI product recommendations, a drag and drop email editor, and a library of email templates to choose from.

One of its more unique features is being able to sync audiences with Google ads.

This represents Omnisend’s most noteworthy aspect: the sheer number of integrations and marketing channels it supports. Omnisend refers to itself as a “marketing automation platform for ecommerce” rather than just an email app.

Like Klaviyo, all these advanced features might be too much if you’re new to email marketing but makes the app a solid contender for growing and more established stores.

Like most Shopify email apps, Omnisend has a free plan that allows you to send up to 500 emails a month to up to 250 contacts. Paid plans start at $16 a month.

In terms of reviews, Omnisend averages 4.7/5, making it one of the better rated email apps.

  • Free plan up to 500 emails a month
  • Paid plans start at $16/month
  • Average 4.7/5 rating

Privy

Privy is another popular choice among Shopify merchants.

The biggest standout feature with Privy is their array of popup options to capture people’s email addresses.

Spin wheels, exit intent popups, and flyouts are just some of the high-coverting popup templates you have to choose from. You can even run a free shipping bar across your site to boost your average order value and cart conversion rate.

So it’s fair to say Privy is not just your stock-standard email app. In addition to these enhancements to your online storefront, Privy also provides SMS marketing.

There’s a free plan for up to 100 contacts which unlocks all the different types of popups. Paid plans start at $15 per month.

Privy’s average review is a respectable 4.6/5 as well.

  • Free plan for up to 100 contacts per month
  • Paid plans start at $15 per month
  • Average 4.6/5 rating

Seguno

Now that we’ve covered all the big names, we start to get to more boutique Shopify email marketing apps.

The first of which is Seguno.

Unlike other apps on this list that support multiple ecommerce platforms in addition to Shopify, Seguno is built exclusively for Shopify merchants. This results in an app where any Shopify merchant will feel right at home.

While you might miss some of the bells and whistles you get with Klaviyo or Omnisend, all your best practice email automations are supported by Seguno making it a nice, simple standalone email app for your store.

There’s a free plan that, unlike other free plans on this list, lets you send an unlimited number of emails. The limitation is that you can only have up to 250 subscribers.

Paid plans start at just $10 a month for up to 1,000 subscribers after which each additional 1,000 subscribers is an additional $10 a month.

Seguno is also one of the highest-rated email apps on Shopify coming in at an average rating of 4.9/5.

  • Free plan for up to 250 subscribers
  • Paid plans start at $10 a month
  • Average 4.9/5 rating

SmartrMail

SmartrMail is another more boutique Shopify email app.

Similar to Seguno in how it covers all of the essentials of ecommerce email marketing and even ticks most boxes when it comes to intermediate and even advanced email marketing, SmartrMail however also provides SMS marketing.

SmartrMail comes with plenty of email templates, a visual email builder, and even a drag and drop email popup editor.

One of the biggest standouts about SmartrMail though is its very generous free plan.

The free plan lets you send up to 5,000 emails per month to up to 1,000 subscribers. Paid plans then begin at $19 per month.

Also like Seguno, SmartrMail has a very high average rating of 4.9/5.

  • Free plan for up to 1,000 subscribers
  • Paid plans start at $19 per month
  • Average 4.9/5 review
